which WSET LEVEL SHOULD I CHOOSE?

  • Level 1 courses are intended for beginners with little or no prior knowledge of wines and spirits, and they are ideal for new enthusiasts and professionals taking on their first role.

    By the time you have completed a Level 1 course, you will:

    Have developed a basic understanding of the main types of wines or spirits.

    • Be able to describe the characteristics of the main styles of wine and spirits.

    • Have an understanding of the basics of assessing the taste of a wine and spirit.

    • Understand how best to store and serve wines and spirits.

    • Be able to make confident choices whilst shopping and in bars and restaurants.

    • Be able to make simple recommendations.

    Level 1 courses are ideal for supporting the following professional roles:

    • Ski chalet and hunting lodge staff
    • Yacht crew
    • Pub and hotel bar staff
    • Delivery drivers and warehouse managers
    • Seasonal staff
    • Hospitality students
    • Retail and wholesale administration staff
    • Chefs

  • Level 2 courses are intermediate-level courses that offer a solid introduction to wines and spirits. Whilst not essential, you may already have a basic understanding of the styles and characteristics of the main types of wines and spirits. They are ideal for professionals in wine- or spirits-led roles and enthusiasts looking to explore wines and spirits more deeply.

    By the time you have completed a Level 2 course, you will:

    • Have developed a comprehensive understanding of the main types of wines or spirits.

    • Be able to describe the characteristics of a wide range of wine and spirits styles.

    • Understand, in detail, how to store and serve wines and spirits.

    • Understand how to accurately assess the taste of a wine and/or spirit.

    • Be able to confidently explore the range of wines and spirits available from independent merchants, online merchants, or bistros and fine dining restaurants.

    • Be able to make informed and wide-ranging recommendations.

    • Pursue a wide range of career development options.

    Level 2 courses are ideal for supporting the following professional roles:

    • Fine dining serving staff
    • New sommeliers
    • Bartenders and mixologists
    • Brand ambassadors
    • Hospitality and management graduates
    • Retail and wholesale sales staff
    • Chefs in fine dining restaurants and bistros

  • Level 3 courses take a deep dive into the subjects of wines and spirits. You will already have considerable experience exploring wines and spirits either as an enthusiast or professional and be looking to progress your understanding of theoretical and practical tasting concepts to an advanced level.

    By the time you have completed a Level 3 course, you will:

    • Have developed a comprehensive understanding of the key factors in producing a wide range of wines and spirits.

    • Understand how these factors account for the style and quality of the main types of wines and spirits.

    • Be able to accurately and precisely describe the aroma, flavour and structure of a range of wines and spirits.

    • Competently use taste to draw conclusions about the quality of wine and spirits.

    • Have gained the confidence to explore and maximise your enjoyment of the full range of wines and spirits.

    • Be able to provide expert advice to colleagues and customers.

    • Have established yourself as a professional in the wine and spirits industry.

    Level 3 is ideal for supporting the following professional roles:

    • Head sommeliers
    • Bar & restaurant managers
